Partner 1: National Soil Resources Institute, Cranfield University (CU), Silsoe
United Kingdom

NSRI is the pre-eminent centre for soil characterisation in the UK with 80 staff dedicated to soil studies. It is active at European and international levels in soil systems research (biology, chemistry, physics), pedology, soil inventory and soil monitoring development and implementation, the assessment and management of erosion, compaction, contamination and other threats, the application of Geographic Information Management systems and in soil-water engineering. Facilities include the National Soil Archive and LandIS, one of the first comprehensive soil and land information systems to be made operational at national level (England and Wales) in Europe. NSRI is also custodian of WOSSAC – World Soil Survey Archive Catalogue – that contains more than 10,000 maps, reports and associated documentation covering much of Africa, Asia and parts of Europe.

Partner 2: Bundesanstalt fur Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR), Hannover
Germany

The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) is the central German geoscientific institution and subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWA). Within the subdivision “Mineralogy, Pedology”, 50 employees are dealing with pedology and mineralogy. The Institute is responsible for the development of FISBo – the BGR Soil Information System in Germany. Mandated by the national soil protection legislation, BGR develops the national soil map at 1:200,000 scale. In addition, BGR has established an international soil profile and analytical soil database and it is connected to various European and international institutions: European Soil Bureau Network; EuroGeoSurveys (EGS), national standardisation (DIN) and ISO-working groups; and the former European Topic Centre on Soil.
